Burns Celebration

A Fantastic Evening of Entertainment.

On Thursday 8th February, Coatbridge High celebrated Rabbie Burns and Scottish poetry in great style. It was lovely to see so many families and friends of Coatbridge High turn out to support our talented young people.

Lauren Elliott and Jack Cummings (S6) did a fantastic job of hosting the event. The evening provided a great opportunity for P7s from our partner primaries to perform, get involved in the life of the school and meet pupils from other year groups. We had ten acts enter our S1-S2 poetry competition, which is brilliant given that standing on stage reciting poetry in front of a big audience is not easy. In first place were Katie-Louise Brown, Olivia McFadden and Sophie Reid (S1) reciting extracts from Tam O’Shanter. In second place was Devyn Lappin (S1) with a modern Scots poem ‘The Marble Quarry’ and in third place, Jennifer and Emily Gill (S2) with ‘Lament for a Lost Dinner Ticket’.

There was ceilidh dancing and a modern dance performance from S3, professionally organized by Miss Duncan, fine musical interludes by Mia Becket, Lauren Friel, Elise Cunningham and Heather Muir and a fantastic Toast to the Lassies by Fraser McIlroy (S6) with a feisty reply by Rachel Watt (S6). We were wowed by a brilliant Tam O’Shanter performance by Miss MacCallum’s S1 drama group. Our much loved house band (Mr McLean, Mr Burns and Mr Donald) performed traditional Scots reels. Our seniors were wonderful helpers both behind the scenes at rehearsals and carried out every job they were given with grace.
